The Azienda Agricola “Il Poggiolo” was started in 1971 through the devotion and passion of Roberto Cosimi. Roberto’s son, Rodolfo (Rudy), along with wife Cecilia, now own and operate the estate since Roberto’s death in 1989.
In 1994 Rudy personally purchased the six acre Terra Rossa vineyard to contrast the traditional style wines made by his father at Il Poggiolo. Terra Rossa Brunello’s were designed, beginning from the first vintage, with a more modern interpretation of Brunello di Montalcino. The Terra Rossa wines are made at the same facility as the Il Poggiolo just in a different fashion.
Rudy has always had a philosophy of producing high quality wines with passion and creativity. A multifaceted man – mysterious, rebellious, and taciturn. Rudy was at one time a European motocross champion and also had success in rally racing. Additionally he is a talented artist who designs his own labels, combining artistic finesse and a touch of humor.
Location of Vineyards
The estate is located at 400 meters above sea level at the highest southwest part of the Montalcino hills, which results in wines of extra elegance and finesse. Terra Rossa wines are vinified in vertical wooden fermentation vats and aged in Tonneaux barrels of French and American oak, which gives the wines a spicy flavor and rich minerality, so appreciated in the New World.
For over thirty years, Rudy Cosimi’s philosophy has been to make the highest quality wines without any compromise. He loves to experiment and never stops trying to stir up new emotions conveying his multifaceted personality through the wines.
